Recently Texas Sen. Cornyn could no longer contain himself and joined in with his bud’s George Bush, Karl Rove and Rick Perry in their new fun pastime/sport of “dis’ing the GOP Base”. Yea, of all things he pulled out the “race card” and used it against “his own” during the debate on whether to allow Mexican Trucks to roll across “our” U.S. highways. The good Senator forgot that he, unlike his afore mentioned pals, had to get re-elected in 13 months. Ooooops! Well, too late. He has sealed his own fate. We should start getting used to war veteran (and democrat) Rick Noriega as he’ll most likely be taking Cornyns seat in the Senate come January 2009. Not something I’m happy about, mind you. The Texas and National GOP are taking the same, out-of-control, Lisa Nowak course of self-destruction. It’s a real head scratcher and fascinating to observe.
Duncan I’m assuming that you have already been in contact with the Teamsters, right? As I advised you last month. You have haven’t you? You’ve been in pursuit of their endorsement and/or support, correct? By the way, kudos on H.R. 1756. That’s a great first step in helping U.S. truck drivers. But a mere 1st of many steps needed. And even as your self-appointed consultant, I had no knowledge of this bill until I did some google searches! The MSM continues to do a masterful job in keeping your accomplishments hidden. How 'bout a special web page on your site just for Truckers? Just a thought.
Apart from the Teamsters there are millions of long haul heavy duty truck drivers, many of whom have been pushed out of other industrial and manufacturing jobs. Their last line of defense being these long haul trucking jobs that keep them out on the road apart from their homes and families for 6 weeks at a time. Living in an 8x8 sleeper cab. Yet these driving jobs are the few available where the pay is adequate to maintain a home and family. And these precious jobs are in danger now that the Mexican Trucks are rolling across the border.
One of the points Sen. Cornyn made in his "impassioned speech" was the fact that we don’t scrutinize Canadian Truckers and they’re allowed to drive U.S. highways. So why not Mexican Trucks? This is it Duncan. This is where we jump in. Our perfect entry point. Take this issue and make some BIG waves. Make a splash. Duncan you need to make a big, controversial splash. This is your opportunity. My advice to you is to pose this question: “ and why are Canadian Truckers in the U.S. taking U.S. jobs?” Along with this slogan: “U.S. Roads for U.S. Truckers”. Sounds real redneck doesn’t it? Visit a local truck stop. You’ll see diversity there as much as you’d see anywhere. Bottom line; Canadian and Mexican truckers should be required to acquire a work visa in order to drive professionally in the U.S. Through the normal process.
So what could be gained by taking this stance? And using this kind of sloganeering? Aside from the support of the above mentioned millions of truckers, you’d most likely also garner the support of OOIDA. Yes, OOIDA, the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association. They have been battling this Mexican truck deal and have had very little help from anyone. You’d be their hero. They wield a lot of influence in the trucking community and could do much for a Presidential candidate such as yourself.
And how about NATSO? The National Association of Truck Stop Operators. (and Travel Plaza’s). I can hear you now, “truck stops? Dowdy have you gone insane?” Hear me out Duncan. Please! Ok, what will happen to these NATSO members when U.S. Truckers, who have in the past been paid in the neighborhood of .40 cents per mile get replaced by Mexican truckers who get paid about .18 cents per mile? First of all, these truck stops are not just fuel pumping stations. Your average truck stop has a retail function selling groceries and dry goods – clothes, gifts, tools, etc. They have large restaurants, laundry and bathing facilities. Truck repair and washing. Some even have motels. Huge operations. Mexican Truckers will not frequent these establishments but for fuel only. They will pull into a roadside park, build a fire and cook their own food. Which will be all they can afford on the money they make. NATSO members will suffer greatly. But then again, NATSO is in a position to help someone like you Duncan. Picture a Duncan Hunter kiosk in every truck stop with your slogan “U.S. Roads for U.S. Truckers” atop it. These kiosks filled with Duncan Hunter Info packets, etc. Possibly manned by a Hunter Ranger volunteer. And imagine how grateful NATSO members themselves will be. They will continue in their present state of prosperity, uninterrupted. Additionally, these truck stop operators have slick magazine publications and websites that you, Duncan Hunter, could be featured in and on such as RoadKing (Travel Centers of America) and Challenge (Pilot Travel Centers). I would suggest getting an ad, with our new slogan, in these publications asap. Full page or double spread. Pay full price for it under the condition that they will also do a favorable interview piece about you with full color pictorial.
Consider taking this stand, Duncan. It will be controversial and unpopular among the GOP elites and the MSM. And among Canadians. As for Middle Americans, however, they’ll stand up and cheer. Middle America has had a lot taken away. They’ve lost a lot of ground over the last couple of decades. This kind of move on the part of a Presidential candidate would make them believe that the negative trend is now reversing. The clock is ticking mightily Duncan. Darvin Dowdy
