Its McCain's Turn Now to Form a Bond With Middle America

McCain Must Also, Like Palin, Form a Bond With Middle America…

And he has damned little time to accomplish this. The most egregious mistake the Republicans can make right now is to assume that the mere appointment of Palin has, like some balm or salve, healed all of the festering wounds of those estranged, disaffected former GOP voters. It has not!  Palin has done her job. She has connected w/Mom and Pop American. But McCain is running for POTUS – not Palin!   McCain is not off the hook – he too must form a bond with Middle America.   The one thing that the Palin appointment has accomplished is that it has now put McCain squarely back in the race. McCain can now win. But that is where the heavy lifting begins. That task being to convince McCain to humble himself and, hat in hand, approach Middle American and repair some of the damage that has been done by the GOP Hierarchy over the past 7 years.

What is weighing heavily on Middle America right now is our anemic economy.   Its not really about us, its about our children, our grandchildren, our nieces/nephews.    We're worried sick about what sort of society they'll have to grow up into.  Will it be some sub-3rd world barrio of a nation? With zero Middle Class? Forced to live in some hillside favela?   A nation where our Constitution has become some "living document" that can mean anything to whatever politician is in power at the time?  We need some reassurances.

Jobs are another major concern.  Certainly there are plenty of mall retail/burger flipping assistant manager jobs available.  But we've lost so many of our manufacturing jobs.  Right now Middle Americans are eyeing a ripe plum - domestic oil production and the high paying jobs it will create.    The $700 billion a year that will fold back into our own economy.  The Republicans are not talking about this particular aspect of domestic oil production - the jobs - and that is being viewed as a lack of interest from the Repub's toward Middle America.  If John McCain wanted to make a BIG SPLASH he'd pose the question: "why are democrats standing in the way of high paying oil field related jobs for U.S. workers?"  And then expound upon that w/some solid statistics/numbers which ought to be readily available.  The dem party used to be for the workers.  They've abandoned that.  The Repub's could fill that void which will pull in considerable union rank n file votes, too.  Not to mention the millions in non-organized labor. Since 1/21/05 the ingrate GOP Hierarchy has been indifferent towards this block of voters that are responsible for pushing George W. Bush’s butt into office both in ’00 and ‘04. Not to mention the ’02 midterms.

John McCain and conservatives need to "cease and desist" immediately, shooting themselves in the foot - both feet - over this Corn Ethanol Program.  We're hurting ourselves by this obstinate negative stance.  The world brought this on itself and we are now profiting greatly from the higher grain prices.  The U.S. is by far the largest exporter of corn and grain products on the planet.  McCain is alienating the farm/agri-business vote - big time!  We need this voting block. Stop it!  U.S. farmers keep the worlds belly full and they deserve to be well paid for it, damn it!  And the Corn Ethanol Program, with all its flaws and short comings  has finally pushed prices up so that can be realized.  Back off immediately Mr!  The corn ethanol program must remain.  This is another source of high paying agri-biz jobs for U.S. workers.  And the world is paying for it.  We are bringing in massive amounts of foreign currency with our grain exports.  Stop crying/ whining conservatives because you're paying 10 cents more for a can of corn.

McCain must go after the corporate Pirates who’ve plundered our nations compainies and financial institutions. Middle America will, by the sweat of their brow, be willing to pay for this bailout “only” if these corportate thugs are forced to repay their “golden parachutes”.   Return the money that they plundered and possiblly face criminal charges.

Last, McCain and the GOP Hierarchy "must" also back away from  Globalism.  Middle Americans are Nationalistic.  Nation centric.  We want no part of globalism/ internationalism. This is and this alone has been (and is) the downfall of George W. Bush.   He is a rabid, open borders globalist and he has put our nation in danger by allowing our sovereign southern border to be breeched.  Middle America considers this a serious violation with blame resting squarly on the Republican Party.

The GOP Hierarchy, all of its consultants, advisers and strategists have a real problem accepting constructive criticism.  Which displays their brazen arrogance.  They've assigned themselves some sort of God-like infallibility.  They'd better clean the wax out of their ears and listen.  Or the experiment is over. Failed. Game over.    Darvin Dowdy

Ike - Look What a Tiny Cat 2 Hurricane Can Do

My house was approximately 100 miles from the Bolivar Peninsula inland.  And we had large tree's uprooted and snapped like match sticks in our neighborhood.  Our house & yard, thankfully was spared.   Ike was a strong category 2 hurricane.  I've learned something.  If we ever get hit with a cat 4 or 5, I'm outa' here.  Check out this link below for some astounding before/after pictures over on Bolivar...DD

Hurricane Ike started as a tropical disturbance off the west coast of Africa in late August, 2008. On September 1 it became a tropical storm near the Cape Verde Islands. It gained strength quickly and was a Category 4 hurricane on September 4. It was the ninth named storm and fifth hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season.

Ike was a storm with an enormous geographic extent. At its largest extent it was producing hurricane-strength winds in a 190-mile diameter around the eye and tropical-storm-strength winds in a 450-mile diameter around the eye.

Hurricane Ike made landfall between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula in the early morning of September 13th as a Category 2 hurricane. In the days prior to Ike's arrival, emergency messages urged people to evacuate the coastal areas and offshore islands saying that they may "face certain death" from the wind or storm surge.

The storm surge swept over the Island and Bolivar Peninsula. Homes and other buildings were pounded by waves and swept away by the surge. In many areas entire neighborhoods were swept completely off the land. The photos by USGS below document the damage. (select link above)

Sen. McCain, Urgent: Shore Up Waning Support in Texas

As Hurricane Gustav bears down on New Orleans it seems that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did a fair job in shoring up the cities levees. They seem to be holding so far. And the ease of the evacuation of New Orleans speaks volumes about Louisiana’s new GOP Governor, Bobby Jindal.   And lets thank Mayor Ray “School Bus” Nagin that he had the good sense to stay out of the way this time and let the pro’s handle it.

So the GOP can get on with its convention there in the Twin Cities. John McCain has earned this time in the limelight, I suppose. But once the convention is over, Sen. McCain has his work cut out for him. He’d best not rest on his laurels. And he’d best not take the great State of Texas for granted, either.   All is not will for the GOP in the Lone Star State. It has been “purpling” over the last few years and possibly trending towards “blue”.    You’re skeptical? Well take a few minutes and read my post from March 07:

“Texas Goes Blue in ‘08”

You see, there’s a lot of angst and anger here in Texas aimed directly at John McCain and George W. Bush over their open borders stance. And over the imprisonment of our valiant Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. This must be addressed. John McCain and the GOP Hierarchy have been callous and “downright mean” (as Michelle Obama would say) when it comes to the level of suffering that the illegal immigrant invasion has caused here in Texas. You scoff? You say that I’m exaggerating that level of suffering? Please, “please” take a few more minutes and read my post from May 07 regarding this. And please, also visit the links I have at the end of the essay. Very important:

“Chaos in Our Fair City”

So you see, its very serious. And McCain needs to bring his dynamic VP nominee, Sarah Palin. They must visit with the wives of the Border Agents, Patty Compean and Monica Ramos.   They must also tour the border area and visit the Border Sheriff’s of the counties that actually border Mexico. These individuals have true stories to tell that will make your hair turn white. Well McCain won’t have a problem there.

“Sen. McCain, its not the levees of New Orleans that need attention. It’s the former GOP voting base here in Texas that has eroded. All is not well here for the GOP but you could change that. Plan on spending a significant amount of time here over the next 2 months, please. Sen. Cornyn needs your help. You do not want ultra liberal Rick Noriega taking his seat. Its not too late. There’s still time to keep Texas from being hijacked by the democrats. And please, don’t assume that cannot happen.”   Darvin Dowdy
